The Envelopes of Halloween Night

The Envelopes of Halloween Night

Halloween had always been a favorite in the quiet suburb where Lily lived. Every house on the street was transformed with decorations: carved jack-o’-lanterns flickered on doorsteps, cobwebs hung from porches, and plastic skeletons grinned from lawns. Children roamed the sidewalks in costumes, and adults were out greeting neighbors, handing out candy, and embracing the holiday’s eerie excitement.

But that Halloween night, Lily found something unexpected on her doorstep—a mysterious black envelope, sealed with dark wax, lying just beside her carved pumpkin. Curious, she knelt down and examined it. The envelope was addressed simply to “Resident.” Opening it carefully, she found a single note inside with a chilling message: “Tonight at midnight. Don’t be late.”

The message was strange and unsettling, but she assumed it was part of some Halloween prank or maybe an invitation to a party. She shrugged it off, and after handing out a few rounds of candy to the eager kids in costume, she left the envelope on her coffee table and got on with her evening.

As the night wore on, Lily decided to check in with a few neighbors. She was curious if anyone else had received a similar envelope. She first knocked on Sarah’s door across the street, who answered, still dressed as a witch, with a tall hat and green face paint.

“Hey, Sarah, did you get an odd envelope tonight?” Lily asked, holding up her own to show her.

Sarah’s eyes widened, and she nodded, pulling out a nearly identical envelope from her pocket. “Yes! I thought it was from someone in the neighborhood, but it doesn’t say who it’s from, and the message is just… creepy.” Sarah read aloud the same words Lily had seen: “Tonight at midnight. Don’t be late.”

The two women were unsettled but decided to check with a few more neighbors. Surprisingly, almost every household on the block had received one of these mysterious envelopes, each with the same message. Some thought it was a clever prank by the local teens, while others speculated it was part of a Halloween event. Despite the eerie nature of the message, most people brushed it off, laughing nervously.

As midnight approached, a strange tension settled over the street. The once-busy sidewalks had emptied, leaving only a few jack-o’-lanterns flickering on doorsteps. Lily was about to go to bed when she noticed movement outside. Peering through her window, she saw a few neighbors gathering on the street, looking around in confusion. They, too, had decided to see if the strange invitation would lead to anything. Curiosity got the better of her, and Lily grabbed her coat and headed outside to join them.

At the stroke of midnight, the streetlights flickered, and an odd hush fell over the neighborhood. People murmured to each other, glancing around nervously. Then, from the far end of the street, a figure appeared, walking slowly, cloaked in a dark robe that dragged along the ground. A hood covered their face, leaving only a shadowy outline visible. The figure moved slowly, deliberately, seeming almost to glide rather than walk.

As it drew closer, a cold breeze swept through the street, causing the gathered neighbors to shiver. The figure stopped a few yards away and lifted a gloved hand, pointing directly at the crowd. The silence was thick as everyone waited, unsure of what would happen next.

Then the figure spoke, its voice low and eerie, echoing through the quiet street: “You’ve answered the invitation. Now, you must hear the truth.”

The crowd was silent, a mix of fear and fascination in their eyes. The figure continued, “One year ago, on this very night, something was taken from this neighborhood—something precious, something irreplaceable. Tonight, it is time for retribution.”

A murmur swept through the crowd as people exchanged confused glances. Retribution? For what? They tried to recall any significant events from the previous Halloween but couldn’t think of anything unusual.

As the figure took another step forward, it reached into its cloak and pulled out a stack of black envelopes, each sealed with the same dark wax. Moving silently, it handed one envelope to each person in the crowd, staring into their eyes as it did so.

Lily’s hands trembled as she took her envelope. Opening it, she found a single piece of paper inside with a new message: “Tonight, a secret from your past will come to light. Return to your homes. Wait, and you will see.”

Feeling both alarmed and intrigued, Lily exchanged uneasy glances with Sarah, who had the same message in her envelope. Slowly, everyone dispersed, walking back to their homes with an uneasy feeling lingering in the cold night air. Lily locked her doors, her mind racing with questions. What could this possibly mean? She tried to shake off the uneasy feeling but couldn’t help glancing over her shoulder as if expecting something—or someone—to appear.

Just as she began to calm down, a loud knock sounded at her door, echoing through the silence. Heart pounding, she cautiously approached the door and peered through the peephole, but no one was there. She opened it slightly, only to find another envelope lying on her doorstep. This one wasn’t sealed and looked hastily placed. Inside was a message scribbled in red ink: “Your truth awaits you in the attic.”

Confused and frightened, Lily hesitated, then slowly made her way upstairs to the attic. She hadn’t been up there in years; it was mostly full of old furniture and boxes. When she reached the attic, she noticed something strange. A faint light was coming from behind a stack of old boxes.

Her heart raced as she pushed the boxes aside, revealing a small, dusty mirror she didn’t remember owning. As she looked into the mirror, her reflection began to change, revealing a younger version of herself—a version she hadn’t seen in years. Memories came flooding back, secrets she had buried long ago.

Suddenly, the mirror cracked, and a voice whispered from within, “Now you remember. Now you know.”

As she stumbled back, she heard her phone buzz. It was a message from Sarah: “Did you get another envelope?” But before she could reply, her power went out, plunging her house into darkness. Only the mirror glowed faintly, casting eerie shadows across the room.

Lily’s heart pounded as she realized whatever secret had been hidden, whatever memory had come back to haunt her, was only the beginning. Outside, a chilling scream pierced the night, and she knew the strange events of Halloween were far from over.
